Disaster in Canada, Playing with Fire, and MLS Playoffs Preview

Welcome back, soccer fans! In this episode of the Sons of a Pitch: An American Soccer Podcast, our hosts give their immediate reactions to the United States Men’s National Team’s disastrous 2-0 loss to the Canadian Men’s National Team. With this result, Canada sits atop their Concacaf Nations League Group, and USA fans across the 50 states continue to question everything that US Soccer and Gregg Berhalter have done over the last two years.

In Major League Soccer Headlines, the Chicago Fire announce that they will part ways with Nemanja Nikolic, their former Golden Boot winner. If Nico Gaitan’s option isn’t picked up, the Fire will have 3 DP slots for new owner Joe Mansueto to fill. It could be a banner off-season for the Fire, especially as they move to Soldier Field for the 2020 season. In the NWSL, the Chicago Red Stars get set to host the Portland Thorns for the semi-finals. Led by Golden Boot winner Sam Kerr, Chicago looks to advance to the NWSL finals for the first time in team history.

In the Second Half of the show, our hosts revisit their pre-season playoff predictions (for better or worse), and give their complete breakdown for the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs. SOP Soccer goes to Indy

Hello soccer fans! Nick wanted to share with you a few memories from his recent road-trip to Indianapolis to watch the Indy Eleven take on the Memphis 901 FC. He’ll tell you more during the next podcast, and the official recap is online, but here are his quick thoughts:

  1. Indy is a great city, and Lucas Oil Stadium is a great venue.
  2. The Brickyard Battalion supporters group is fantastic.
  3. Indy Eleven played very well – executed their game plan, converted set pieces, and never let up the pressure.
  4. Memphis played a mid-block, but Indy was able to get into the channels and play balls over the top to create chances.
  5. Shout out to the family of Memphis 901 Defender Josh Morton. I got to meet his family, and they were great to talk to.

And we have to mention that Indy is in the middle of a 24 game, home unbeaten streak, dating back to last season. Best of luck to the Indy Eleven and their supporters as the team looks towards the playoffs!

Current home of the Indy Eleven.
A great venue for a great club.
Kick off! Indy Eleven vs. Memphis 901 FC
Nick greets Ilija Ilic post-game.
Nick congratulates Karl Ouimette post-game.

Mike & The Kings in the North, Dr. Vanessa on Josef’s Injury, and MNUFC Reality Check

Welcome to The Sons of a Pitch: An American Soccer Podcast. In this episode, our hosts discuss a wide range of Major League Soccer topics, and we look forward to your feedback.

To start, Mike tells tales of the final Chicago Fire game at Bridgeview while cheering with the Kings of the North. Our host and TFC superfan saw the Reds clinch a playoff spot, eliminate the Fire, and witness the final whistle at Seat Geek Stadium for the men’s team. The atmosphere was great despite the home team’s play on the field. In the next segment, the hosts touch on the Nations League, what it means for the USMNT and the CanMNT, and how Brenden Aaronson – who is reported to be called up – will fit in with the squad.

Next, Nick gives MNUFC fans a reality check. While making the playoffs is great, doing to in your third year is quite the under-whelming task historically. While Loons fans should be happy to have made it, the team may not be built for sustained success, and back-to-back playoff appearances for expansions teams isn’t too common. So Minnesota fans, let him know exactly how you feel in the comments below. Then in a special segment, Dr. Vanessa opines on Josef’s knee injury and probably time tables for the Atlanta United striker. She and the Five Stripes faithful are hopeful he returns for the playoffs, but the team can’t rush his recovery.

The hosts then round up all the action from the last week of games and analyze their impact on the playoff picture. All this more on this week’s episode. Be sure to join the conversation in the comments below or on social media:

Josef’s Out, More Miami Rumors, VAR Rant, and the League Roundup

Welcome back, soccer fans! We are The Sons of a Pitch: An American Soccer Podcast, and we are excited to talk soccer with you. In this episode, our hosts discuss the impact of Josef Martinez’ injury on Atlanta United’s playoff hopes and the impact that Michael Parkhurst had on Major League Soccer, in the wake of his retirement announcement. They break down the latest rumored signing for expansion club Inter Miami – David Silva, currently of Manchester City – and Nick thinks this signing would put Miami in the playoffs from the start.

Nick then rants about VAR and the misunderstanding and ignorance soccer fans have when it comes to reviewing goals scored and whether a player was offside. Look up the International Football Association Board’s Laws of the Game for the exact text, or just remember that a player either is or is not offside … there’s no subjectivity to it! That’s why clear and obvious error is the wrong standard when reviewing such a play.

Finally, Mike keeps things rolling with the league roundup – a look at every game from last week around the MLS and what impact they have on the playoff picture. Hint: not much impact as there are still half the playoff spots up for grabs. Only LAFC has clinched in the Western Conference, but only one spot remains in the Eastern Conference. Tune in to hear who has the best chance at getting in, and which team is a cup contender.

Fire Sale! Nashville SC & Inter Miami Signings, and League Roundup

Welcome back to The Sons of a Pitch: An American Soccer Podcast. In this episode, our hosts provide their take on new Chicago Fire owner Joe Mansueto and his buy-out of majority owner Andrew Hauptman and their relocation to Soldier Field for the 2020 season. Nick and Mike also break down the latest signing for MLS expansion clubs Nashville SC and Inter Miami.

Tune in after the break to hear the league roundup, all the action from the week’s MLS match ups, and how it affects the playoff picture. As it currently stands:

In need of a push:

  • Chicago Fire – New owner bump!
  • FC Dallas – Stop losing to the Fire!

See you next year

  • Sporting KC – Not enough in the tank this year, get ready for a redemption season.
  • Montreal Impact – You still have Daniel Lovitz starting?
  • Orlando City – Give Nani the ball, and get out of the way.

Fire Sale! and their New, Old Stadium

The Chicago Fire have been purchased by a new ownership group and have announced a deal to play at Soldier Filed in (actual) Chicago. The Sons of a Pitch will have their thoughts on the matter in our next podcast episode.

USMNT Embarrassment and Mediocrity, Nations League, and MLS League Roundup

Hello soccer fans, and welcome back! It’s great to have you as we recap the United States Men’s National Team’s embarrassing performance vs. Mexico and their mediocre outing vs. Uruguay. In the heat of the moment, most USMNT fans were through with the Berhalter experiment and his heavy use of MLS players. However after a 48hr cooling off period, Nick has talked himself off the ledge. Clearly, the USMNT was attempting to develop their new style, and unfortunately Mexico was the perfect team to destroy those attempts. In their next match-up vs. Uruguay, the USMNT controlled more of the game, but still could only muster a single goal. Has progress been made? When will games actually matter to Berhalter and the US Soccer Federation? Tune in to find out.

Next, the hosts give a brief update on what is the CONCACAF Nations League, how it impacts the development of soccer in North and Central America and the Caribbean, and what it means for World Cup Qualifying. We all love meaningful games, but could the new FIFA rankings based system end up hurting countries like the United States and Canada?

Finally, Nick and Mike recap the handful of Major League Soccer (MLS) games that took place this week. NYCFC is the new Eastern Conference leader, and could break their spell of early playoff exits. Meanwhile, Colorado surprises short-handed Seattle, and Portland defeats Sporting KC, despite not getting their share of referee’s whistles. Toronto FC and Orlando City pick up points to help their playoff push, but how will they fare as the season winds down?
