Joe Fala: Future Star, Hot Minute, and USMNT Front Office Move

Greetings once again, soccer fans! This episode is a special one for The Sons of a Pitch: An American Soccer Podcast for two reasons. First, we have joined with Big Heads Soccer Network! We are excited to partner with this podcast network and provide their first show dedicated to Major League Soccer (MLS). Be sure to follow BHM Soccer on twitter and check out the various shows on their network.

Next, we are thrilled to bring you an interview with rising star Joe Fala. Joe finished off a stellar college career with the Ramapo Roadrunners, setting a single-season scoring record and being a multiple All-American selection. He has played for FC Motown of the NPSL and most recently participated in the MLS SuperDraft – the only Division III player to participate. Though not selected, his reputation and work ethic have earned him a trial with Red Bull New York. Tune in to learn more about RBNY’s newest prospect, and be sure to with Joe all the best on his path to the pros.

In other news, Nick and Mike break down the moves (or lack thereof) by the Chicago Fire. They also introduce you to New York City’s new head coach Ronny Deila, and provide commentary on the Philadelphia Union’s record signing of Designated Player Jamiro Monteiro. How will these moves affect the Eastern Conference? Tune in to find out.

In the second half of the show, our hosts analyze the hiring of Brian McBride as General Manager of the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT). There’s agreement that McBride is a good hire, and there is hope he brings his hard-nose style of play to managing the program. As the man in charge of Gregg Berhalter, player recruitment, and club relations, McBride has a tall order to fill, but The Sons of a Pitch are confident in his abilities. They also discuss Sergino Dest’s recent decision to represent the USMNT over The Netherlands and his choice to leave Ajax training camp in Qatar.

MLS Conference Semi-Finals Recap

Hello fans of Major League Soccer, and welcome to another episode of Sons of a Pitch Soccer Podcast!

Tonight, the hosts recap the conference semi-finals of the Major League Soccer Playoffs.

  • Portland and Seattle gave us another chapter in the Cascadia rivalry and an instant MLS Playoff classic. Did anyone think that Dairon Asprilla would be the deciding factor?
  • Sporting KC showed up against Real Salt Lake and confirmed why they were the best in the West. Has SKC’s offense proven the deciding factor in the playoffs so far?
  • Red Bulls New York ended Columbus Crew’s dream season. No one could #SavetheCrew from the high press. Can RBNY finally capture that elusive cup victory?
  • Josef Martinez regained his Golden Boot form as he and Atlanta United eliminated NYCFC. How will he fare against Red Bulls pressure and their ability to smother the best players on opposing teams?

Looking forward, Nick and Mike stick to their pick of SKC winning the MLS Cup. Nick has them defeating RBNY, while Mike sees Atlanta United advancing out of the East. What are your thoughts on the playoffs so far? Is your pick to win still alive? Ep. 30 – Week 27 MLS Recap: Trouble atop the East, RSL is Scoring, the Galaxy keep Spiraling

Welcome back, soccer fans!

In this episode, we review all the scores and highlights from Week 27 of Major League Soccer. Notably, the top three teams from the Eastern Conference (New York Red Bulls, Atlanta United, and New York City FC) all suffered losses. Should the teams be worried as they head for the playoffs, or is this an opportunity for them to re-focus and finish the season strong?

Meanwhile out West, Real Salt Lake continues its scoring blitz, defeating the LA Galaxy 6-2. The hosts talk in depth about RSL’s scoring pair of Rusnak and Kreilach, the strong wing play of Plata, and the confidence of Coach Petke. If RSL can keep scoring, the hosts know they can keep winning. In fact, when scoring 2 goals, RSL has 11W, 1L, and 1D. When scoring 1 or less goals, they fall to 2W, 9L, 4D.

Finally, the hosts take a hard look at the LA Galaxy and come to some hard truths: the Dos Santos brothers were a flop, David Bingham is an average goalie at best with a defense that continually lets him down, and Sigi Schmid might have to hang up his whistle. But at least they have Zlatan, right … ?
