Nick’s Final Episode (and some CCL talk)

Hey, soccer fans! Sadly, that is the last time I great you as a host and producer for The Sons of a Pitch: An American Soccer Podcast. After three years of podcasts and videos recorded in garages, basements, and campers, I am stepping away. The show is going in a new direction, and I can no longer be a part of it.

What I will say is this has been an incredible three years. I’ve met people from around the Chicago suburbs and around the world. I’ve been inspired by other shows and stories. I’ve truly found what others have already known: the soccer community is one of the best and most supportive. I cannot thank you all enough for choosing to take your precious time and listen to me talk all things American soccer on a weekly basis. It’s humbling, and I’ll never forget it.

Thank you to my co-host and good friend, Mike, to my family, to John Donovan (our first and greatest sponsor), and most of all to the viewers and listeners who’ve tuned in over the years. You’ve been amazing, and this whole experience is unforgettable.

Thank you, and keep growing the game of soccer.
-Nick

MLS Headlines, Roundup, and USMNT Chatter

Hey, soccer fans! Welcome back to The Sons of a Pitch: An American Soccer Podcast. Tonight, we cover all the happenings from an action-packed week of Major League Soccer (MLS).

In the Eastern Conference, Toronto FC has risen to the top and is Supporter Shield favorites. DC United tries to rebound after firing Ben Olsen as manager – but may try to keep him as part of the organization, and Caden Clark makes a memorable MLS debut for Red Bulls New York. In the Western Conference, Sporting KC keeps winning without an offense, and Portland just keeps winning. Period.

In the second half, we discuss the record number of Americans playing in UEFA’s Champions League, and discuss whether we’re on the cusp of an American Golden Generation. If we are, WHY ISN’T USSF DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT!? No international friendlies, no training camps, no updates on what Berhalter is thinking…are we the only ones furious?

  • Inter Miami’s historic win
  • the return of Pity Martinez
  • the Galaxy’s statement, and
  • Seattle’s reminder of who’s the best in Cascadia.

Portland vs. Orlando, Ebobisse and Dotson to USMNT? and MLS Headlines

Hey, soccer fans, and welcome to The Sons of a Pitch: An American Soccer Podcast. We break tonight’s show down into quarters as if we’re back in AYSO. Be sure to stay tuned for all this coverage and more:

First Quarter
We preview and predict the MLSisBack Final between Portland and Orlando City. Nick believes Portland will raise the trophy, but also describes a few scenarios where Orlando City comes out victorious (Sebastian Blanco red card, anyone?). Portland has the history and experience, but Orlando City as Nani and the desire to win “at home” and bring back their first ever Major League Soccer trophy – and a Concacaf Champions League berth.

Second Quarter
During the MLSisBack Tournament, Jeremy Ebobisse has cemented himself as the Timbers’ starting striker. Has he done enough to earn a spot on the United States Men’s National Team? Nick believes he’s earned a call up to training camp, at the very least. We break down the current USMNT striker pool and where we think Ebobisse fits in.

Third Quarter
Hassani Dotson of Minnesota United has also played himself into the USMNT conversation. We don’t think his outlook is quite as bright as Ebobisse’s, however. The lack of top flight experience and a deep United States defender pool are prohibitive. But why not bring him into camp and see what he can do!

Fourth Quarter
We break down lots of headlines around the Major League Soccer, including:

  • Gotze to MLS?
  • Inter Miami sign French international Blaise Matuidi from Juventus
  • Minnesota United sign Bakaye Dibassy
  • Christian Pulisic picks up another injury
  • New formats for MLS and CCL

Thanks for listening, and enjoy all the MLS and American soccer action!

  • Broadcasting bias in favor and against foreign broadcasters/announcers calling MLS games

Signings around the MLS, Thoughts on the CBA, and the Future Structure of the League

Hello once again, soccer fans! Tonight, our hosts answer listener questions on trades and signings from around Major League Soccer (MLS). What are the key points and what makes them different from other American leagues? While they bargaining and goals are the same (get the best players for the best value) there are a lot more bargaining chips in the MLS – TAM, GAM, and international roster spots, to name a few. Also, MLS franchises can scout the entire world for soccer talent, where other American leagues have a much more limited player pool.

Specifically, our hosts address the signings of:

  • Lucas Cavallini, Vancouver Whitecaps
  • Diego Valeri, Portland Timbers
  • Francisco Ginella, Los Angeles FC
  • Adam Buksa, New England Revolution

In the 2nd half of the show, Nick and Mike give their thoughts on the upcoming CBA negotiations and the anticipated issues between the MLSPA and the league. The focus of the negotiations will likely revolve around free agency, salaries, and … chartered flights!? Yes, with increased revenue, the league is going to have a much more difficult time not raising the salary cap, minimum salaries, or allowing chartered flights.

The show wraps up with thoughts on further expansion and what the future structure of the league might look like. With Charlotte being just announced as the MLS’ 30th franchise, the Major League Soccer is at the size of most other American sports leagues, but much larger than any other soccer league in the world. Are they at a breaking point? Or is a restructure on the horizon? Tune in for some scenarios that Nick and Mike think could happen.

After stunning the US 2-0 in Toronto, the Americans jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Zardes and Morris shined in a 4-1 victory, and the defense held. Then, they take a deep dive into the Concacaf Nations League. They analyze the current tournament, its impact on the confederation, and how it affects World Cup qualifying. They also provide a look at how the new FIFA ranking system works and the algorithm used to determine the points for each game. Is it fair? Are there still bugs?
